Stop Loss - Primary Tool For Successful Trading

Stop Loss Order - The Primary Tool For Successful Trading

How many times have I heard -  "I don't use a stop because it always gets hit".

Well, that's kind of the point. Not that it should always get hit, but that it does get hit every time your trade idea doesn't match up with the markets idea. Remember, the market can remain irrational far longer than most of us can remain solvent.

When I hear that statement my ears always perk up. In fact, anytime I hear the words Always or Never in relation to trading, I get tickled. Why? Trading is a lot of things, but it's rarely "always or never" anything. Think about this, if your Stop did get hit every time, on every trade (always), that means without realizing it, you've got a pretty good knack for knowing exactly where the market is headed next. If it "always" goes there, perhaps that should be your target and not your stop. When I challenge most folks with this, the "always" comes unraveled pretty quickly. Turns out, it doesn't always happen, just enough to make you feel wrong and feeling wrong is a very dangerous emotion.

Emini Podcast | Gap And Stall | Episode #1,560

S&P 500 Emini Futures

Friday was a trend down day, but things firmed up at the end and the close was quite bullish. On an hourly chart you will notice that the final candle on Friday had no wick on the top. This tells us the last orders to cross the desk were buyers looking to get long before the weekend, and/or traders exiting short positions. Remember, it takes two to tango. It takes both a buyer and a seller to create a transaction.

True to form the market did gap higher on the Globex open Sunday night and promptly stalled. Based on the "Gap and Stall", we issued the following Tweet -

Fed Rally Fails - Emini Podcast | Episode #1,557

Fed Rally Fails - Trading The News Can Be Tricky Business

As surmised in our previous post, Pre Fed Fibs , QE4 is now underway and traders are scratching their head as they try to determine if the Evans Twist is good, bad or a trick. Along with QEinfinity, the Ponzi scheme has escalated to include the purchase of $45B of treasury notes each month on top of the QEi commitment to purchase $40B of mortgage backed securities.

It was announced last week by the Chinese government on a Chinese web site that China has a new toy. It amounts to a very large gun and it's pointed at America. Notoriously cryptic about the extent of its nuclear arsenal, China announced the launch on chinamil.com.cn a Chinese military news site. The DF-31A is believed to have three warheads per missile and a range of about 7,000 miles. This makes any city in America a reachable target and it can be launched from the back of a truck.

Will Santa Rally The Emini Futures?

Santa Claus Rally And The Emini Futures

From a historical perspective the odds of a Santa Claus Rally are good. How good?

  • Over the past 20 years December has posted positive gains 80% of the time.

However, with John "Thelma" Boehner and Harry "Louise" Reid barreling our economy towards the Fiscal Cliff, the odds may have shifted in favor of the Grinch this year.

10 years bonds currently yield 1.6%. If the bond bull were to stumble and yields went to 3% we could have a very different situation on our hands very quickly.

Weekly Close SP 500 Emini Futures

(ES) Weekly Close S&P 500 Emini Futures

Earlier in the week on Tuesday we saw a "Touch and Go Landing" at the 1374/1375 Weekly Zone. This is significant in that we touched this Zone twice and saw no real consolidation. The market reached down from 1385 to touch the Zone almost in a compulsive type move, as though it had no other choice. You know, like the last rattle of the front door nob before retiring?
