Let's define Day Trading - intererstingly enough "Day Trading" is considered a noun. If you've ever done any day trading, it feels a lot more like a verb... an action verb.
- Buying and selling (round trip) commodities, equities, options, futures contracts, or currencies, in the same trading session for the purpose of profiting from relatively small price fluctuations.
It is important to note the role of trader and investor are quite different. Using equities as an example, investors typically have some level of interest beyond just the shares of the company being traded. Their interest may be in the company, the product or service offered, or perhaps even the technology the comapny owns or is developing.
The trader in most cases does not. While the trader may be a fan of Apple products, he is buying and selling shares (trading) in the company as a speculator, focused solely on profiting from the movement of price. The day trader elevates this concept to an even higer level. An active day trader could very well be long Apple stock at the opening bell and short the stock before his mid morning latte'. Due to the immense risk/reward involved, there are important day trading rules the day trader must adhere to.
While the investor is faced with sorting through mountains of data pertaining to P/E ratios, cash flow, executive compensation, etc... the trader and day trader, have little use for this information. In fact, fundamental information can confuse the technical day trader and even throw him off his game. Traders and day traders base their decisions not on news or reports, but on price charts. These "day trading charts" and their accompanying "day trading indicators" are the key to understanding a world where fortunes are made and lost in a matter of minutes, several times a day... before lunch.

Squiggly lines on a computer screen. To the trader though, it's a beautiful languange. Each day represents a new and unique puzzle to be solved where the prizes are grand and the penalties stiff.
