Do Emini Markets Respond to Riots?
Will the rioting across America have an impact on the markets? History tells us, quite sadly, "War is good for the markets". Which brings us to the question "Is there a difference between war on our shores vs. foreign shores? Certainly there is when it comes to the personal safety of every American.
Pondering this question I found time to do a small amount of research as I prepare for the Globex open this evening. To do your own research, use the link I found on
Wikipedia which is list of incidents of civil unrest in the United States.
This Bullish Weekly move in the Dow Index which continued for 6 weeks (6 candles) corresponds to the following:
1968 – Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., April 4, Memphis, Tennessee, precipitates all April 4–14 riots, including:
1968 – 1968 Detroit riot, April 4–5, Detroit, Michigan
1968 – 1968 New York City riots, April 4–5, New York City, New York
1968 – 1968 Washington, D.C. riots, April 4–8, Washington, D.C.
1968 – 1968 Chicago riots, West Side Riots, April 5–7, Chicago, Illinois
1968 – 1968 Pittsburgh riots, April 5–11, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
1968 – Baltimore riot of 1968, April 6–14, Baltimore, Maryland
1968 – Avondale riot of 1968, April 8, Cincinnati, Ohio
1968 – 1968 Kansas City riot, April 9, Kansas City, Missouri
1968 – Wilmington Riot of 1968, April 9–10, Wilmington, Delaware
1968 – Trenton Riot of 1968, April 9–11, Trenton, New Jersey
1968 – Columbia University protests of 1968, April 23, New York City, New York
1968 – Louisville riots of 1968, May 27, Louisville, Kentucky
The market pulls back into August '68 and then this rally unfolds lasting 17 to 18 weeks.
Perhaps this extended up move was more political fever than "thugs in the street"?
1968 – 1968 Miami riot, August 7–8, Miami, Florida
1968 – 1968 Democratic National Convention protests, including the police riots of August 27–28, Chicago, Illinois
This is July through October '69.
1969 – 1969 York Race Riot, July 17–24, York, Pennsylvania
1969 – Days of Rage, October 8–11, Weathermen riot in Chicago, Illinois
It would take a much closer more in-depth and much larger sample size than what I have researched and shared in the last 5 minutes.
However, for those who enjoy such things, it should be an exciting journey to prove or disprove any tangible correlation. Keep in mind this question is about mass violence on American soil vs foreign soil. The foreign soil issue was settled by history long before the question ever crossed my mind.
If you do additional research please share it with us all.
See you at the bell!
Blessings
DeWayne
